Moving Day!
  • Please be at your home during the scheduled delivery time of your A Way to Move container. You can call us at any point with questions, toll free at (888) 446-6838 or (888) 44 MOVE U.
  • Have extra boxes on hand in case you forgot to pack something.
  • Double check your home or apartment to make sure you got everything.
On Arrival In the case of international moves, storage of containers can be expensive so plan to unload it as soon as possible.  Please remember to complete the customs clearance process in order to get your freight released in the country you are moving to. Unpacking When you are done unpacking, please contact the agent at destination in order to arrange for the container to be picked up. Additionally, please make sure that you have a good idea of the neighborhood you are moving to and that a container can indeed be positioned in front of your home.

Packing Hints

Packing your belongings shouldn't be all that complicated - it just takes a little planning. You want to make sure that you use only newer, moving boxes and that fragile items, such as china and glassware, are packaged using special packing paper or bubble wrap. We never recommend using grocery or liquor store boxes because when you pick them up, they're usually made of weak cardboard and can rip open very easily. Here are a few other packing pointers aimed at preventing any damage to your belongings. But if you should have any specific questions along the way, please don't hesitate to call us toll-free at (888) 446-6838 or (888) 44 MOVE U.
  1. Place heavier items toward the bottom of the box and lighter ones on top.
  2. Keep box weights to 50 pounds or less to make lifting easier.
  3. Check the carton to make sure it will hold the weight of the contents. Many times using packing tape on the bottom helps to reinforce the box.
  4. Be sure to use lots of filling materials in between fragile items.
  5. Color code or number boxes for designated rooms and keep a log of the boxes for that room.
  6. Pack one room at a time and start well ahead of the scheduled move day --that way it won't seem so overwhelming.
  7. Mark boxes with breakable items as "Handle with Care" or "Fragile" and be sure to load these on top of all other boxes.
  8. If you can, disassemble any larger items to make it easier to move them.
Dishware & Glassware Because most dishes and glasses are breakable, we recommend you pack as follows:
  1. Line a box with packing paper and individually wrap each plate and piece of glassware.
  2. Stack the plates on top of one another and turn them upside down into packing paper and re-wrap the entire bundle. Then seal it with packing tape and stand the plates on edge.
  3. For the best protection, Dish Packs are sold through our packing materials suppliers.
  4. Glasses, china and fine stemware should be stuffed with crumpled tissue and wrapped individually and placed in an upright position within the box.
  5. For additional protection, use corrugated paper rolls and cellular boxes for any fragile item and place plenty of extra paper in between.
Mirrors and Paintings

Wrap mirrors, paintings, pictures, and frames in packing paper, corrugated paper rolls or bubble wrap and use tape diagonally across for additional protection. When loading into cartons or boxes, be sure to lay them on their edges.

Electronic Equipment

If possible, computers, printers, VCRs, televisions and all other electrical devices should be packed in their original boxes. Otherwise, purchase the sturdiest boxes available and place Styrofoam or other padding around the entire device. All electrical cords should be wrapped separately and be sure to mark them carefully.

Major Appliances

All heavy appliances should be loaded against the front wall of the container. Refrigerators should be cleaned in advance of the move and defrosted.

Furniture

Furniture should be padded with blankets or bubble wrap for added protection and loose cushions, wrapped in plastic bags, make an excellent buffer between furniture pieces. Most importantly, secure dresser drawers with tape to prevent them from opening during transit (especially if you leave clothes in them).

Disposal of Packaging Materials

Used packaging material should not be placed back in the container. The driver will make sure there is no rubbish in the container before taking it away. The packaging material can be disposed of in your new area through garbage removal, but we would encourage you to recycle what you can if recycling is available.

Do not move

For obvious reasons, the following items are prohibited from moving in our containers:
  • Fuels or flammable liquids
  • Paint
  • Bleach
  • Chemicals
  • Ammunition
If you need more information these or other potentially hazardous items, please call us.

Choosing the Right Container

A Way to Move offers three different container sizes. The smallest is 20 feet long, the medium is 40 feet and the largest is a whopping 45 feet (not all countries accept 45 foot containers). We have found that an average 2 to 3 bedroom home fits perfectly into a 20 foot container. Larger homes will obviously require a medium unit, and only if you are moving a mansion, do you need the largest container. If you have any doubts about the best size for you, please call our Customer Service team toll-free at (888) 446-6838 or (888) 44 MOVE U.
